I'd say that age does have something to do with things, in that you are 13 and still growing and developing. So you would typically need more calories and protein for growth than someone like me who has stopped growing.
but in terms of if you are younger do you experience more side effects, It's not something I've heard of, but maybe someone else knows.

for me, I always have a sore throat, my voice is often hoarse, i don't know about my teeth too scared to go to the dentst, I think thats it for physical things.

Whats been happening for you?

I think your right in thinking maybe the age has something to do with it. As mentioned, this is a big time of growth and change, and the most vital time to get proper nutrients. As for me, being in my early 20's, I still have some growing to do, but not as much. I remember getting really cold all of the time, and my teeth also, became cavity-stricken. My mood has changed also. I find that I am more depressed and feel like life is pointless sometimes. (not to the point of suicide, but mainly wondering why I should bother stopping my ED) Your metabolism slows down, you become irratible, your body holds onto fat for dear life, you develope dysrythmias, you can lose your period or become irregular...funny how we all know the bad side effects, and dont do a damn thing about it, ugh...frusterating...*hugs* to all!

cowgirl you're right we know all the side effects and risks, but we still do it. I think that proves how this isn't a choice we've made.
just wondering how many people knew all the risks before their first purge? for me I knew some, but I didn't know about that cardiac problems.
cowgirl- you only have 23 posts but I feel like you're always around probably because when you post you have something worthwhile to say.

Thanx sofaraway, your a doll You guys always make me feel so welcome...the worst side effect of bulimia is the cardiac issues. Due to the loss of electrolytes from vomitting, our body cannot use them. The main use for them, is in the heart. The hearts' cells need the sodium and the potassium in order to funtion. The heart runs off of the sodium-potassium pump, which is what ultimately depolarizes the heart and thus, gets it to beat. So, in a nutshell, without the sodium or potassium, our heart beats out of wack, and slows way down. Bulimics, on average, tend to have lower heart rates as well. So, if you think a slow metabolism is your only problem...think again. Its pretty scary...

ooo, i did NOT know about the low heart rate thing. i mean, i knew about the potasium/sodium being v important for muscle functioning, but it had never occurred to me that low percentages would make one's heart slower. my heartrate was really low during cross country season this year (like in the 60 bpm range) and i just passed it off as part of running, but i guess that wasn't the only factor! kindof scary.

omg me too.... i used to go 2 school dances and be able to dance all krazie in the hot heat for 3hours - now i can barely do it for 30 mins..... that's fucced me up the most, because i've always wanted to become a performer, but always thought i hadda lose weight - but being bulimic definitely didnt help in any way .....

i knew most of the risks before i first purged but still did it anyway, cause i couldnt stand looking in the mirror, it's krazie how much a low self esteem can effect people........ i got side effects REALLY quickly tho - i can't drink too much caffiene or else i'll wkae up the next morning with a really bad throat infection, i cant even drink a lil bit of alcohol with out throat infections ..... every morning when i brush my teeth, and spit, theres actually blood that comes out (it's not from my teeth either) - i can't do ANY physical activity with out getting quikcly exhausted - i lost my singing talent, which really sucked - i get really sharp stomache pains constantly - i can't speak too loudly, or else my throat will start hurting really badly - godd and i havent even been bulimic too long

so far away....
i think you will remember me coming here and crying about how I couldnt do it...
i think it is a choice of some sort... just not a decision.

at some point you choose to throw away youre problems, and you see just one way of doing so. you know... you feel that hurting inside and realize you CAN get it out.... and then its too late to just stop.

I get cold very easily. I have poor circulation in my toes and fingers and they turn blue often, motly after a purge. My bowels are irregular, I'm usually always constipated. I am bloated almost always. And my teeth...well I have a lot of cosmetic filling in my teeth that I have to constantly go back and replace because of erosion from the stomach acid! My dentist actually laughs in frustration! lol...but Its good to let your dentist know what is going on. You can tell him that you USED to be bulimic and you are very worried about your teeth. Ask if he can do anything for you.

hm.
side effects.
I get cold all the time, and even when its really hot i can't keep my toes or fingers warm.
I am constantly nauseous, whether I've eaten or not.
I'm always tired.
My head always hurts or feels fuzzy.
My teeth are super sensitive.
My throat is always painful.
The flap in your stomach that stops acid from coming out of your stomach doesn't work on me.
Microscopic bits of acid come into my throat and make my throat and tongue a little swollen every day.
I've broke out in the past month really bad, and generally I have really clear skin.
My hand, right one, is scratchy and sore all the time.
My tonsils hurt.

I think that's all I can think of.
If I think of more, I'll tell you.

I wanna know what it's like to be awkward and innocent, not belligerent.
I wanna know how it feels to be useful and pertinent and have common sense..
Let me in, let me in to the club, cuz I wanna belong,
And I need to get strong, and if memory serves,
I'm addicted to words and they're useless..
I'm a mess, I'm a wreck.
I am perfect, and I have learned to accept all my problems and short comings,
Because I am so visceral, yet deeply inept..
I am tired and hungry and totally useless.

well... celine... you seem to have 'satissfied' almost all the common side effects... it's good that some of it DOES go away if you dont b/p tho... I hope most gets better.

With me...
I feel really weak. I used to exercise daily and now I dont have the energy
every time I get up I had to sit down again or lean against something because I get SO dizzy I am convinced I would faint (this really worries me)
I am almost always cold (which is very unlike me)
My vision is sometimes blurred and sometimes I see like little white dots moving as I try to look at them, it's wierd.
My throat is almost constantly sore
I am mostly constipated
I get headaches more often, when I do they usually develop into migranes
my skin is VERY dry
I often wake up feeling depressed
My social life is almost non-existent because I never feel like going out
my studying is suffering.. and will probably influence my academic performance
Needless to say how it affects my family and friends...

cannot think of anymore now... I think that's enough anyway!
