I was wondering why there are so many new attention, learning and behavior disorders being found in children. I came up with a short list of possible reasons. Does anyone have an opinion?

1. A sudden rise in genetic defects in children
2. Spare the rod and spoil the child
3. Clever marketing by the drug manufacturers
4. The feminist movement
5. High rate of divorce
6. Over diagnosis for fun and profit
7. Too much drug use by the baby boomers
8. It is fashionable to take these prescribed drugs
9. Lazy parents
10. Loss of religious values
11. The feminization of culture
If you would like the link here it is .. you may also view some of the other answers .. which are very good ..

I think its just more detection. Like back in the days of yore theyd be like 'dislexic? don't be silly you just can't be bothered learning!' whereas now theyre beter at diagnosing it. I don't think the amount of disorders has risen just the acceptance of them

Bad parenting by far.. not just being lazy.

For example.. me! I wasn't born a cutter. Something, or many things, happened in my life that made me a cutter. Do I think my parents had something to do with? Most definately. Do I think that its all there fault? No of course not.

No one reason for doing what we do. But marketing as well as other issues that hit us through the media and through peer pressure are probably the main things

1. A sudden rise in genetic defects in children
Genetic defects have existed since the beginning of time. Therefore, they have been diagnosed more, instead of an increase in them. We have been diagnosing things such as OCD, ADHD, and dyslexia more often now (although some could argue that this is primarily an excuse to keep children from learning).

2. Spare the rod and spoil the child

This is true. The lack of punishment in America has allowed children to become incompetent and lazy. A rod is not necessarily beating a child, more that showing the child the error of their ways through consequence is important. There is a bar to be set though. It is irresponsible to not teach morals to a child, but it is dangerous to be overbearing to the point of abusive.

3. Clever marketing by the drug manufacturers
Well, sure, if you'd call it that. Let's take ADHD for example. My brother has it, and I believe in the effects of it because I have witnessed the difference of his mood when he is on medication and when he is not. That doesn't go without saying that he is capable of controlling himself OFF of the medication, and the manufacturers make it seem as though it is necessary for him to be a productive person without disrupting everyone else. Nowadays, drugs are the new "thing" when it comes to controlling disorders, whether it be mental, physical, or emotional, and the drug manufacterers have done an excellent job of marketing their products to make us feel as though they are necessary.

4. The feminist movement

Doubtful. This really doesn't seem like something to worry about.

5. High rate of divorce
Absolutely. Divorce is traumatic for a child because of the emotional effects it has on them. The idea of their world being split apart is hard to fathom, much less experience. At a young age, children can be used as leverage in a court case, and this is also traumatic. Divorce is a huge reason for disorders-it can lead to depression and anxiety issues at an early age.

6. Over diagnosis for fun and profit
I disagree with this one. A doctor is bound by a policy to do their patients no harm. Therefore, an over diagnosis for profit is ethically out of the question. Now, with the drug manufacturers, yes. But not with doctors or therapists.

7. Too much drug use by the baby boomers
Depending on the drug, perhaps. But it depends on the use of the drug as well as the influences of the drug on the child whether they be around the drug or become addicted while still developing.

8. It is fashionable to take these prescribed drugs

Not for the children. I don’t think so.

9. Lazy parents

Refer back to the “use of the rod,” section. I don’t like seeming repetitive.

10. Loss of religious values

Yes. Although religion is controversy at the root, the morals and principles that are developed through religion have been lost because the ideas of religion have dwindled with education. In America, the separation of Church and State in the government started this, because it extended into the education part of the country, and the only children that receive these values with their education are the ones that go to private schools. At home, these have dwindled as well because religion is not as commonly practiced. This is a big reason that moral beliefs are not developed the same way (not saying that they do not exist) but there is a definite difference.

11. The feminization of culture
Again, doubtful.

I would add to the list myself but my head hurts. I also wonder where a list might be that might explain any improvements of children today.

Today I saw my hero fall apart,
The one who taught me to be strong,
On the outside I look fine,
But on the inside I am dying.
My strength is overcome by pain,
My love for you remains the same,
The loneliness is setting in,
I have no one to free my sins...
