What do hydros do to you long term? Does anyone know? Can you get hooked on them? I was prescribed them for a sports injury, and I really like how they make me feel. I've told my doctor that I "uh lost them" a few times to get a refill and I just love them. Does anyone know?

Yeah, hydros or hydrocodones are morphine-like pain killers at the narcotic level. They are one of the most abused pain killers in the US. Pain killers can kill you if you take to many! They also lower your quality of life in general because like any addiction you'll just look forward to the pain killer and nothing else. Since it is a licit drug it has been rigoriously tested in humans by the FDA and doesn't pose a serious long term threat if taken in moderate doses. The more you take it, the longer, the stronger the addiction, the worse your life gets and a higher chance that negative side effects from muscle spasms to unusual fatigue or unconsciousness occur.

As for personally, for years I had serious migraines for stress and other things (TMJ/Bruxism). I was given percodan and percocet for my pain and they just became candy after a while. I didn't need to have a migraine, I just wanted to feel that way. Now I'm pretty much afraid of pain killers and just take the pain instead of using pain killers. Its a crappy addiction to have because it turns you into a hermit that only wants to use pain killers and zone out.

Hahah, sounds like I need to take one or two of those. ;)

I get migranes too, but with hydros, they just seemed to go away, hmmmm. I used to just tough it out until the puking stages, then I would take around 4 Ibprophin, but then I was prescribed the hydrocodone, and I haven't had another one yet. I'm not trying to promote this, its just that my doctor won't prescribe them anymore, and I only have 5 left. I don't know if I can go without. Are there any withdrawl effects?

The doctor probably isn't prescribing them anymore because he probably knows you've become addicted to them. Afterall, he is a doctor and I'm sure he knows that it's the most abused drug in the U.S. It might also be because of your age. My mom said they don't really give them out to younger kids that much, and if they do they only give so much.

Yes there are with-drawals. Here's an article I got through yahoo.

Hydrocodone Withdrawal

Hydrocodone is a narcotic that can produce a calm, euphoric state similar to heroin or morphine--and despite such important and obvious benefits in pain relief, evidence is pointing to chronic addiction. Pure hydrocodone is a Schedule II substance, closely controlled with restricted use. But very few prescription drugs are pure hydrocodone. Instead, small amounts of hydrocodone are mixed with other non-narcotic ingredients to create medicines like Vicodin and Lortab. This means they can be classified under Schedule III with fewer restrictions on their use and distribution.

Subject to individual tolerance, many medical experts believe dependence or addiction can occur within one to four weeks at higher doses of Hydrocodone. Published reports of high profile movie stars, TV personalities and professional athletes who are recovering from Hydrocodone addiction are grim testimony to its debilitating effects.

If a regular hydrocodone user stops taking hydrocodone, he or she will experience hydrocodone withdrawal symptoms within six to twelve hours but, the withdrawal symptoms are usually not life-threatening. The intensity of hydrocodone withdrawal symptoms depend on the degree of the addiction. For example, hydrocodone withdrawal symptoms may grow stronger for twenty-four to seventy-two hours and then gradually decline over a period of seven to fourteen days. The duration of hydrocodone withdrawal symptoms varies greatly from person to person.

Hydrocodone Withdrawal symptoms include but are not limited to:

intense cravings for the drug
irritability
nausea or vomiting
muscle aches
runny nose or eyes
dilated pupils
sweating
diarrhea
yawning
fevers
chills
inability to sleep
depression

Those are some pretty nasty symptoms. You can get through it, though. I promise. ;)

Hey, thanks for the information. I really wish that I had never taken them. I guess it won't be so bad. I'm already an insomniac, with depression, and I think I'm a purging anorexic, but I guess I'll have to deal with what I got myself into. I'm so stupid.

You're not stupid. And it's not your fault. *hugs*

How can you say that I'm not stupid to do this to myself? It is my fault, I kept taking advantage of my doctor by saying that I lost them, and that my ankle still hurt since I tore a few ligiments during a soccer game. I saw what could potentially happen to me, but I kept taking them when I knew I didn't need them. It's like I saw a hole in the floor, and I didn't even try to avoid it. I tried to use these to escape my problems just like all of the other unsuccessful coping mechanisms that I have tried. This is just another failed attempt.

(By the way, I took the rest this morning 5, and I was feeling really good, but now I have one of the worst migraines I've ever had. Also I feel like I've been hit by a truck. I need more.)

Has anyone else ever abused hydros?

Oh, do I know the feeling. I've been addicted to these pills for about 3 years now. Get out while you can. It's hell.

Hydrocodone is basically legal heroin. The potential for addiction is going to be the same - incredibly high, as are the withdrawals - supposedly the worst withdrawal experience of any drug. The reason it takes away your migraine is because it is a painkiller, take enough of them and you can avoid any pain, even being run over by a truck, that's part of the reason they are so addictive. Who wouldn't want to escape pain, not to mention that the withdrawal for any drug is the opposite of the effect that it causes when you are on it. Thus, if hydrocodone eliminates pain, expect very serious pain when you go off of it, fortunately it won't kill you, you'll just feel like it will. You are not stupid, addiction does that to you. The drug makes you feel good, and who wouldn't want that. Then it becomes a problem, but all you can think about is the good feelings that it brings, that's the trick.

In my psychology class, my teacher (he's really cool by the way) brought up the abuse of hydros, and other pain killers especially among teens. I guess they are a growing problem. Anyway, he explained how it effects your brain, and of course like any pain killer, the drug releases endorphins, but the thing that I didn't know about it was that if you abuse them long enough, and then stop, you won't be able to release them anymore.

With normal excercise, one can never use all of the endorphins in the brain, and they can be replenished. With pain killers, new ones are not made. That leads to extreme muscle cramps and other pains that don't go away on their own. I didn't know this. That scares the crap out of me.

I wish I was you right now loserpride. I can't get anymore, my friends have cut me off. Man I miss that feeling.

Yeah they are okay in moderation, and at the beginning I had the same thoughts as you. I thought that certainly I could never have a problem with it because I am Kayt, and nothing bad will ever happen to me. What a crock of sh*t. I'll tell you, I was sure wrong.

I never had blue ones, mine were always white.

i was so hooked on them that i stole them from old people. Now after my withdrawl period is over, and i haven't done them for a year, i feel so stupid and like a sick bastard, because comeon how low do u got to be to steal from an old person. Oh and take it from me the withdrawl on them is not easy but it is way worth it.

There are days that I just wish I could get my hands on those, but I stay strong and realize it's not worth it. There are better ways to numb my pain. There are other ways to being happy. I have to suck it up.

No, you don't want to use them. Eventually you will want more and more. Recently, I "borrowed" some from a friend. Or should I say, I took them without asking. That's how desperate I am. I was in her room, she went to take a shower, they were out in the open, so I took some. I hate myself for that. She is my best friend, she has always been there for me, and I used her for drugs. I am a horrible person, and an even worse friend. You don't want to be like me.

yes sport, the withdrawls are horrible. You get chills and sweat. I woke up for nights in a row drenched in sweat. I never imagined that I could ever get myself into such a situation, but I have. Please stop now and save yourself the agony. It is a dead end street. You are not alone and I didn't realize that until today. There is light at the end of this dark tunnel

Please be careful because I think we have all been there and look where we are now? Dealing with addiction. You will be hooked before you yourself even know it. We are all here!

and the sad thing is about taking the rest of your five is that the feeling will be gone in an hour and we will spend days trying to get our hands on 5 of them for one hour of feeling good!
